About Kansai International Airport

Kansai International Airport, opened in 1994 on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, serves as a major international hub for the Kansai region. It has played a vital role in promoting the region’s economic growth and internationalization. Since its inauguration, the airport has seen a continuous increase in passenger and flight numbers. Recent years have focused on expanding and improving infrastructure, particularly to meet the rising demand for international flights.

The key points of the renovation

A key improvement was the consolidation of immigration checkpoints from north and south to a central location, expected to ease congestion. The departure area was expanded by 1.3 times to accommodate approximately 40 million international passengers annually.

The commercial area also saw significant changes, including the installation of 27 new stores, featuring Japan’s largest walk-through duty-free shop, “KIX DUTY FREE.” Spanning about 2,500 square meters, it offers a range of products from 341 domestic and international brands, including cosmetics, perfumes, alcohol, tobacco, and souvenir snacks.

These stores cover a variety of categories such as cosmetics, fashion, jewelry, watches, alcohol, tobacco, electronics, books, drugstores, travel essentials, souvenirs, toys, snacks, convenience stores, relaxation services, and more. Detailed lists and information about these stores can be found on the official website of Kansai International Airport.

The airport continues to undergo further renovations in preparation for the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025. This renovation is the second phase of a four-phase construction project, with future plans including new lounges and security checkpoints. The final area is expected to reach about 16,000 square meters.

These changes are part of Kansai International Airport’s efforts to enhance passenger convenience and prepare for the growing demand of international travelers.
